Distant Storm

Jack Davis’s Distant Storm (30" x 36") captures the striking dichotomy between serenity and tension that defines the Cornish seascape. The composition unfolds in horizontal bands of textured brushwork, transitioning from the deep, undulating turquoise of the sea in the foreground to the dark, brooding storm clouds that dominate the distant horizon. Above, a calm and luminous sky of cobalt blue adds clarity and contrast, heightening the sense of natural drama.

The ocean, rendered in expressive strokes, appears alive with movement and energy, while a thin ribbon of reflected light marks the boundary between sea and sky—perhaps the glint of sun breaking through just before the storm rolls in. The subtle layering of colours and the interplay between sharp lines and soft transitions create a compelling sense of space, distance and emotional depth.

Davis, who lives and works in St. Just, paints not from photographs but directly from his immersive experience in the landscape. His intuitive approach brings an emotional authenticity to each scene, driven by the rhythms of weather and light. As a tutor at the Newlyn School of Art and a recipient of the Threadneedle Prize, Davis continues to shape and inspire contemporary landscape painting with a voice that is both grounded and ethereal.
