I Can Resist Everything Except Temptation

Size:44 x 44 in.

I Can Resist Everything Except Temptation is a 39" x 39" mixed media work in which The Connor Brothers continue their witty deconstruction of vintage pulp aesthetics and contemporary philosophy. At the centre of the composition, a glamorous mid-century heroine in a fitted yellow dress turns over her shoulder, caught between seduction and self-awareness. Her pose is cinematic, yet the surrounding torn paper edges and layered textures remind us that we are looking at a fabricated narrative – a truth assembled from fragments.

The bold text, laid out in stark block typography, delivers the work’s punchline with deadpan clarity: I can resist everything except temptation. It is both humorous and rueful, a borrowed line that exposes human frailty while celebrating it. Emerald green dots cascade across the lower left, echoing the playful visual language of pop art, while coffee-like stains and scribbled markings introduce the idea of a work in progress – a life, like a canvas, still being edited.

The Connor Brothers, the artistic partnership of Mike Snelle and James Golding, built their practice on the belief that fiction can reveal deeper truths than reality alone. Their work blends nostalgia, satire and social commentary, challenging viewers to re-examine familiar cultural tropes. In this piece, desire becomes both subject and mirror: we recognise the joke, and yet we recognise ourselves.
